Year 6 (The Gazelles)
Fortnight Beginning 6.1.20
In Year 6, we have had a very busy and challenging start back to the new term. In English, we have been focusing on the text ‘Cloud Tea Monkey’ and have written our own diary entry based on the book. We have had to ensure that we include all of our Year 6 writing expectations and have produced some excellent pieces of writing. In Maths, we have been converting fractions to decimals and finding percentages of an amount. This has been challenging but we have been resilient in our learning. We have also been completing arithmetic questions and trying to improve our score each time. In Art, we have been focusing on The Maya and have produced our own watercolour artwork based on Mayan buildings in the style of Frederick Catherwood. In P.E, we have been playing hockey and ensuring we follow the rules. We have also taken part in some circuit training, which tested our determination and motivation.
Fortnight Beginning 25.11.19
In Year 6, we have had a very challenging and enjoyable few weeks. In English, we have been focusing on report writing and have produced our own newspaper article based on the Christmas story. We have also been including Year 6 vocabulary and using a range of punctuation. In Maths, we have been focusing on ordering and comparing fractions. We have also challenged ourselves by ensuring we simplify our fractions. We have worked very hard to improve our morning task scores and we have seen an improvement. We have impressed Mrs Gartshore with our resilience and growth mindset. In Topic, we have been continuing our Shang Dynasty work. We have planned our own diary entry ‘Our Life as a River’. This has been interesting as we have labelled different parts of a river system and have researched how the flow of water changes. We look forward to writing our diary entry next week!
Fortnight Beginning 11.11.19
Discussion texts have been the name of the game in English. We have looked at a balanced argument and researched the ‘for’ and ‘against’ reasons for having a hierarchy system in our society. Our problem solving skills have been further developed this week in Maths. We have backed up our ideas with our language of reasoning… This is what I think, I know this because… It has been tricky and we’ve worked really hard. Our Topic has shone through in Yoga, Art and English as we have learnt more about The Shang Dynasty. We are budding historians and our vocabulary is expanding by the day. Speed reads, comprehension tasks, inference skills and personal reading have made our Guided Reading sessions whizz by this week. Year 6 is certainly exciting!
Fortnight Beginning 14.10.19
We have had a very busy and challenging few weeks in Year 6. In Maths, we have been focusing on long division and converting our remainder into a decimal. We have also completed daily arithmetic challenges. In Science, we have been investigating how light travels in straight lines and have completed diagrams to show our understanding. In English, we have been studying the text ‘The Arrival’ and have been using powerful language to describe feelings and emotions. We have also been asking and answering emotive questions to edit and improve our work. We have had some fantastic Yoga sessions, which have been focusing on our current topic work of Shang Dynasty.
Fortnight beginning 30.9.19 - 7.10.19
In Year 6 we have had a very busy and challenging week. In English, we have been focusing on poetry all about Greek Gods. We have written our own poems based on a poem called ‘The Temple’. We have really impressed our adults with our choice of vocabulary. In Maths, we have been translating shapes and then carefully plotting coordinates. This has been very challenging as we have had to be very accurate. We have also been looking at tangram puzzles and have made some beautiful animals. They have required a lot of determination and resilience but we have been focused and have even made our own puzzles. Ask us all about tangrams as we are now experts!
Fortnight beginning 16.9.19 - 23.9.19
Two weeks have flown by in Y6. We have finished our place value unit in Maths and we are seeing some big improvements in our morning task scores. We have been working really hard on completing them in the time given. Writing has been fantastic. We have independently written a biography in Science on Aristotle: it is handy that he was Greek and shared some very early ideas on classification, which is the focus of Biology this term. Our topic projects are coming along nicely; we are adding pieces of work to them each week. All of our preparation for our Myths is completed so we are looking forward to publishing them in our books.
Fortnight beginning 2.9.19 - 9.9.19
It’s been a busy time already in Year 6. We have well and truly started our Greek topic with lots of work going into our topic portfolios to showcase all of our new knowledge. In Maths, we have been looking at place value of numbers up to ten million and beginning to round them. English and Reading have been closely linked with Greek gods through myths, which we will begin to plan and write next week. We were introduced to ‘Vocabulary Victor’ to help us with unfamiliar words. We look forward to meeting the rest of his gang!
